How to choose the right paint system

Choosing the right paint system for the corrosion protection of a construction presupposes that many different factors are taken into account in order to ensure the most economical and technically suitable solution. For each project, the most important factors to consider before choosing a protective coating are:

A. Environmental corrosion When choosing a paint system, it is very important to consider the conditions in which the construction must operate. To determine the magnitude of the corrosive effect of the environment, the following factors must be taken into account:
• Humidity and temperature (operating temperature and temperature fluctuations)

• Presence of ultraviolet radiation • Exposure to chemicals (eg specific exposure to industrial plants)

• Mechanical wear (impact, friction, etc.)
For structures submerged in water or buried in the ground, corrosion is usually local and difficult to determine. For this reason ISO 12944 defines 3 main categories:
To determine the magnitude of the corrosive effect of the environment, the following factors must be taken into account
• The total thickness of the paint system

• The total thickness of the paint system

The required surface preparation

• Minimum and maximum repaint intervals
It should be noted that the more corrosive the environment, the more thorough preparation of the surface is required. Also, repainting intervals must be strictly adhered to.
Section 2 of the ISO 12944 standard defines corrosion categories for atmospheric conditions, soil and water. This standard is a very general estimate, based on the corrosion time of steel and zinc. It does not correspond to a specific chemical, mechanical or temperature exposure.
